The proposed new laws would include fines of $40,000.

A South Australia MPs has proposed outlawing the sale of cigarettes to anyone younger than 21 in a new measure trying to stamp out smoking.

If passed, independent Frank Pangallo’s reforms — which are being introduced into the SA Parliament on Wednesday — would ban anyone born after January 1, 2009, from buying cigarettes before the age 21.

Anyone caught selling tobacco to someone younger than 21 would face a fine of $40,000.

Currently, the legal age to purchase cigarettes is 18.

If passed, the laws would come into effect on January 1, 2025.

On Wednesday, Sunrise’s Adelaide reporter Hayden Nelson spoke about South Australia’s moves toward creating a smoke-free generation.

“There’s certainly laws which haven’t been seen in Australia before that would see the legal age of smoking raised from 18 to 21,” Nelson said.

“There will be a $40,000 fine for anyone who purchases tobacco for those aged 21 and under.

“The (state) health minister said he will consider the laws, saying smoking is the state’s biggest cause of preventable deaths.”

Pangallo on Wednesday told the Adelaide Advertiser the cost of smoking to the community is enormous.

“The cost ... across our public hospital and health systems amounts to billions of dollars a year,” Pangallo said.

“Yet we have a disturbing trend where the number of young Australians smoking continues to increase.”
