Dream Home host Dr Chris Brown spills on ‘dramatic’ personal renovation disaster

‘The house was about to fall into the hole!’

He’s the vet-turned-TV star who is now guiding six teams of aspiring renovators through the joys — and pitfalls — of house remodelling in Channel 7’s brand new reality show, Dream Home.

And the tackle-anything Dr Chris Brown can certainly relate to the contestants’ ‘rookie renovator’ status.

Looking back on his personal dealings with building works, Chris has recalled the terrifying moment his own home nearly fell in on itself as he tried to construct a garage.

“On my first renovation, I decided I needed a garage underneath my house,” he tells 7NEWS.com.au, adding he had obtained the requisite council approval.

“With a couple of tradies, we went about digging out the garage underneath the house, in the sand.

“We just kept on digging, digging, digging, until a rather large sound indicated the house was about to fall into the hole!

“So that’s about as dramatic as it as it gets.

“To have your house sort of falling in on itself, that was a pretty big learning curve.”

The problem was solved with “a lot of underpinning and a lot of structural support, very quickly”.

“A lot of those steel support posts that you can sort of wind up and down, they went in, and thankfully the house didn’t fold in half,” he says, now able to laugh at the once-shocking experience.

The TV host says unexpected situations such as this are what make renovation shows so appealing.

“There’s so much natural drama, you don’t have to fake anything,” he says.

“Choices have to be made, and it’s either the right way or the wrong way, and you only really discover that as you go along.

“Sometimes it’s too late to turn back once you realise you’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Chris says his role as host of Dream Home is almost as a “coach” to the pairs, supporting them through their renovation challenges.

“I’m there to help lift their spirits and help give them a pep talk when they need it,” he says.

“To get them across the finish line and remind them why they’re there.”

He says the beauty of watching the show unfold up close is witnessing the Aussie spirit and people “digging deep”.

“What these couples are going through, and just how much they put on the line to get these renovations done, is quite inspiring and quite uplifting and but also thoroughly entertaining,” he says.

The renovating pairs on Dream Home this season are:

  • Married couple Brad and Mel from Melbourne
  • Victorian sisters Taeler and Elle
  • New parents from Queensland Hannah and Jonny
  • Queensland tradie brothers Rhys and Liam
  • Sydney couple Jacinta and Jordan
  • Sydney couple Lara and Peter

Dream Home premieres on Channel 7 and 7plus Sunday at 7pm.
