Millions of Aussies brace for one of the coldest mornings of the year as polar blast hits

Get another blanket out because temperatures are about to plummet.

It’s time to get an extra blanket out, with Aussies set to shiver through the coldest morning of the year on Wednesday, with temperatures set to plummet across the country.

In Sydney, polar blasts from the south will push temperatures as low as 6C, before reaching a top of 16C.

On Tuesday, the Bureau of Meteorology’s Christie Johnson, appeared on Sunrise with the dire weather warning.

“It is polar air. We have a large air pressure system sitting south of Tasmania and a low-pressure system in the Tasman and between them, they are funnelling cold air up from the ocean, particularly in eastern Australia,” Johnson said.

“The high-pressure system is giving us clear skies over much of the east and reasonably light winds, particularly inland, which gives us the perfect conditions for frosty Mondays.”

But Johnson said temperatures were likely to be chilly all week.

“We are forecasting below average for pretty much all capitals for the rest of the week, particularly the southeastern capitals are expecting to see temperatures below average,” Johnson said.

“There is a bit of reprieve perhaps for places like Adelaide, where there is more cloud coming in and that might extend to some parts of NSW over the next day or two, keeping minimum temperatures up a bit.

“Really, there is not a huge change in the weather over the next week — still expecting a cold period for the rest of next week.”

The forecast for the rest of June is below average.

“The long-range forecast for the rest of June suggests average or below average.

“However, when we move into July and August, we are still expecting it to be warmer than average,” Johnson said.
